Desmond Tobin

Dr Desmond J. Tobin is Full Professor of Dermatological Science and Director of The Charles Institute of Dermatology at the UCD School of Medicine, Dublin, Ireland, EU. Prior to Sept 2018 he was Professor of Cell Biology and Director of the Centre for Skin Sciences at Bradford University (UK). He holds a BSc from the National University of Ireland (Maynooth), a PhD from the University of London, UK (St. John’s Institute of Dermatology) and post-doctorate from New York University Medical School’s Dept. of Dermatology, USA. He researches in basic and applied skin/hair sciences, with a focus on skin/hair pigmentation in health and disease (incl. melanoma) and on hair growth disorders, especially alopecia areata – the focus of his PhD project and postdoctoral work. Des is Fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists, Royal Society of Biology, Institute of Trichologists, Royal Microscopical Society, Institute of Biomedical Science, and Member of the Royal Irish Academy. He is a recent president of the British Society for Investigative Dermatology. Des serves(ed) on several editorial boards (incl. as Specialty chief editor of Skin Physiology, Frontiers in Physiology). He sits on several scientific advisory panels in Pharma and heath/personal care, and was a subpanel member of the recent UK government audit 'Research Excellence Framework (REF2021)'. He has published over 200 publications, incl. 3 books.
