Current affiliation: Head of the laboratory of tissue engineering; Kurchatov Institute and Burn Center at the Vishnevsky Institute of Surgery, Moscow, Russia Education: MS in Biology, Moscow State University, Moscow. PhD in Skin toxicology, Institute of Toxicology, Saint Petersburg. Previous work experience: Russian Academy of Science, Institute of Ecology and Evolution, Moscow, Russia Columbia University, Department of Dermatology, New York, USA University of Dundee, Ninewells Hospital, Dundee, Scotland, UK Specialization/interests: skin biology with special emphasis on skin regeneration, hair growth and epidermal differentiation. Research interests comprise both fundamental and applied aspects of epithelial biology and environmental influence upon tissue homeostasis. Fundamental studies are focused on molecular aspects of epithelial cell response to micro- and macro-environmental factors such as xenobiotics, hormones (AhR/dioxin receptor ligands) and hypoxia (HIF pathway). Specifically, we seek to dissect the role of dioxin receptor and hypoxia pathways in epithelial cell fate determination, stem cell homeostasis aned stromal angiogenesis. Applied studies include bioengineering of skin and respiratory epithelium equivalents for medical applications (burn and wound therapy, plastic surgery), drug testing and disease modeling. An ultimate goal is to dissect the role of environmental factors in epithelial regeneration, morphogenesis, senescence and disease.
